About the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre
The Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre (BURC) was set up in September 1984, and on Mayday 1985 the BURC Offices were officially opened by the poet John Hewitt.
AIMS
- To provide a Centre which will promote the interests and the benefits of the unemployed and other social and economically disadvantaged groups without prejudice of age, gender, sexual orientation, political or religious opinions.
- To provide education, training, advice, representation and counseling to the unemployed and the citizens of Northern Ireland.
- To provide information and campaign on the issues, problems and social benefits effecting the unemployed.
- To promote and conduct research into the causes of unemployment, strategies for employment and recomposition of the workforce.
- To campaign against and expose the broader issue of poverty and its debilitating effect on our society.

New Pathways to Essential Skills

The Adult Education Unit continues it's work towards Adult Literacy Awarenessthrough this cross-border project, part-financed by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the ICBAN Partnership of €195,033 and a further € 73,500.

Donegal Workers Success!

Hospira (now Abbotts) workers in Donegal town are celebrating today after achieving Level 2 Certificates from City & Guilds in Adult Learner Support. The Central Hotel played host to an award ceremony celebrating their success. This course was part of a project into raising awareness about adult literacy issues with a particular focus on Workplace Learning. The project entitled ‘New Pathways to Essential Skills’ is part financed by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme Ireland/Northern Ireland managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN) Partnership, to the tune of €260,044.
